• Radiative transfer leads to strong coupling between the observed Lyα emission and circumgalactic and intergalactic environment (density and velocity structures). • At fixed intrinsic Lyα luminosity, the observed (apparent) Lyα luminosity has a broad distribution, reflecting the broad distribution of environment.
