Correlation between serum adiponectin level and insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes(mellitus)

2005
Objective To assay the serum adiponectin(APN) levels in normal subjects and the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),and to discuss the correlation between APN and insulin sensitivity. Methods Twenty normal controls and 58 T2DM subjects were included in this study. The latter were divided into normal weightgroup, overweight group and obesity group according to their body mass index(BMI).HOMA-IRwas assessed in all groups.Meanwhile, the parameters such as fasting APN,HbA_(1C),fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels were also measured. Results Compared with normal control group, the APN levels in overweight and obesity groups were significantly decreased(P0.01).The APN levels in obesity group were significantly lower than those in(overweight) group, and the APN levels in overweight group were significantly lower than those in normal weight group(P0.05).Compared with normal control group,HOMA-IRin T2DM groups was significantly increased(P0.01).Serum APN levels were negatively correlated with BMI(r=(-0.538,)P0.01)and HOMA-IR(r=-0.459,P0.01) in all subjects. Conclusion In patients with T2DM,serum APN level issignificantly decreased, especially in the overweight and obesity people.APN is negatively correlated with BMI and HOMA-IR.
