The invention discloses a moving target detection method robust to illumination variation, which comprises the following steps: 1. obtaining a foreground and background edge image respectively according to a current input image and a current background image; 2. conducting mathematical morphological filtering processing to the foreground and background edge images; 3. separating the edge of foreground and background and taking a foreground edge obtained through separation as a moving target edge set; 4. conducting subsequent processing to the moving target edge set and outputting a moving target image; and 5. updating the current background image according to the current input image and the output moving target image. Since the image edge information can be still kept to be unchanged relatively under the condition of illumination variation, the invention eliminates the 'exposure' phenomenon caused by the illumination variation to some extent. Since the method is robust to the illumination variation, the invention has the advantages that the moving target and the position thereof can be accurately detected in real time, the operation is simple, the operational speed is high and the method can be used for real-time intelligent video monitoring systems or other real-time intelligent video content analysis systems.
