Pyrocarbon for joint replacement

2021
Abstract Pyrolytic carbon (PyC) is a form of elemental carbon. Its favourable mechanical and biochemical properties mean it is well suited for a number of medical applications from cardiac valves to a bearing surface for joint arthroplasty. In this chapter we examine the material properties of PyC including its manufacture, safety profile and biocompatibility, structural characteristics, the bone prosthesis interface, and the articulating surface. An understanding of the material properties can help us to evaluate benefits as well as the potential shortcomings of PyC for use in joint arthroplasty.
