Topological Rigidity of Non-Compact Orientable Surfaces

We show that a proper homotopy equivalence between two compact orientable surfaces is properly homotopic to a homeomorphism. Thus, non-compact orientable surfaces are topologically rigid in the strong sense in the category of topological spaces with proper maps.
