Design and Construction of Rion-Antirion Bridge in Greece

2004
Located at the strong seismic zone of tectonic movement, and erected across the strait with deep water and thick soil strata, the Rion-Antirion Bridge, a 5-span total floating continuous cable-stayed bridge having been built under extremely difficult conditions is indeed a formidable challenge to the Bridge builders. The caisson foundations of the Bridge in the strait are rested on reinforced soil with gravel layers to mitigate large horizontal movement. Lots of offshore construction methods have been adopted, such as erecting of the upper pylon shafts and main girders with huge floating cranes, prefabricating of the caissons in docks and floating of the caissons to their destinations. The innovations and ideas of the builders afford really helpful experiences deserving to learn.
