f-Electron excitations in the neutron spectra of mixed-valence Sm1−xYxS

Abstract The magnetic response function and the valence of 154 Sm 1− x Y x S (0⩽ x ⩽0.33) have been determined by powder and single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering and by L III -edge spectroscopy, in the temperature range 10–300 K. Considerable influence of the Sm–Sm interactions has been observed on the excitation spectrum of the mixed-valence f-electrons.
