Wear behaviour of foam and fiber based sandwich composite – A review

2021
Abstract Most of the industrially manufactured components working life are reduced due to the less wear-resisting property of the composite materials. To produce components in reduced wear rates are more important in many engineering fields nowadays. This review has analysed the wear characteristics of fiber and foam sandwich composite materials and the wear optimization technique. The wear properties of different natural and synthetic fibers of jute, banana, polyurethane, carbon, glass, sugarcane are studied. The sandwich foam material-based composites were also analysed for the wear characteristics. To analyse the wear property of the sandwich composite, they are used pin-on-disc, multi-tribometer, heating, drilling, and friction testing equipment. To find the optimum wear parameters of the composite they used the Taguchi and Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). They used the SEM images to analyse the microstructure of the different sandwich composite materials. So, knowing the wear performance of the sandwich composite material before manufacturing the products is very important in manufacturing engineering to increase the life of the end components.
