3D simulation of laser additive manufacturing

2004
This paper describes the simulation technique and results of 3D Simulation of Laser Additive Manufacturing [LAM] process, and its correlation with experimental data. The simulation models laser-powder-substrate interaction, using a combined analytical-numerical approach, such that it is transparent to the user. The shape and thermal history through multiple passes for the build height is tracked accurately. The near field, or laser spot region, calculation is linked to a far field solution to create a complete picture of LAM behavior as a function of its process parameters. The simulation makes use of commercially available pre- and post processors, and the simulation time is comparable to present-day casting simulations.
