Radiography of the Mesentery

2021
Radiologic evaluation of the mesentery is best performed with cross sectional imaging, most commonly CT. MRI and ultrasound exams are indicated in some conditions and the technique is tailored to the clinical question. Plain films, angiography and nuclear scintigraphy are reserved for specific indications. CT is most commonly performed with oral and intravenous contrast enhancement and multiplanar reconstructions are routinely performed by the technologist whereas 3D reconstructions are performed for CT angiograms by specially trained technologists. Some exams require patient preparation and have relative contraindications. These concepts and the roles of each of these exams is discussed in this brief chapter.
