Growth and Characterization of (1-x)PbMg1/3 Nb2/3 O3-xPbTiO3 Single crystals

2017
Solid solutions from the concentration range (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) was employed to grown (1-x)PbMg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 - xPbTiO 3 single crystals using various heat treatment process under lower pressure. Transparent green and yellow colored single crystals of irrespective shapes are obtained. For the fabrication of (1-x)PMN-PT crystals, the raw precursors are PbO, Pb 3 O 4 , B 2 O 3 , MgO, Nb 2 O 5 and TiO 2 mixed together by using x = 0.28/0.32 and crystallization is carried by three processes (annealing/quenching/normalization). PMN-PT single crystals characterized by XRD and SEM techniques. (1-x)PMN–xPT crystals were characterized by XRD and it was revealed that the obtained crystals exhibit the perovskite phase. On the basis of Bragg’s equation, it was observed as pseudo-cubic symmetry in normalizing process, rhombohedral in annealing process and amorphous nature in quenching process. On the other hand, the Bragg’s reflections appearing with the increase in the concentration of Ti i.e for 0.68PMN-0.32PT single crystal indicates the tetragonal, monoclinic symmetry and amorphous by the normalizing, annealing and quenching processes respectively. The Scanning electron microscope revealed that all the crystals, which are obtained from annealing and normalizing processes, exhibit fine grain growth of similar microstructures, except quenching process due to exhibit of amorphous microstructure. In conclusion, the single crystals of (1-x)PbMg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 -xPbTiO 3 were obtained and their properties were characterized by using XRD and SEM techniques. The flux method under various heat treatments like, annealing, normalization and quenching respectively is studied. From these studies we found that annealing process is better than the other two processes for the growth of PMN-PT single crystals.
