A preliminary report on the visual and technical analysis of artist’s varnish from two paintings by Kees Van Dongen

AbstractThe present report represents the initial findings of an investigation into the varnishing technique used by Kees Van Dongen on two paintings executed in the 1920s and 30s. Further analysis of works by Kees Van Dongen will allow a more developed understanding of his varnish use and will add to the information drawn from this preliminary study of two specific paintings from a particular phase of his output.
