X-ray diffraction methods are successfully applied as diagnostic tool for bearing performance analysis based on the measurement of microstructural related alterations in the highest loaded regions of bearing components withdraw from service. Discrimination is possible between conditions leading to: surface distress, spalling failure or smooth bearing operation which is indicative for high reliability in bearing performance. The approach of combining testing under service conditions with material response analysis carries the advantages of much shorter R & D times in e. g. developing new gearboxes. The approach stimulates close cooperation between bearing manufacturer and customer.
