BEHAVIOURAL MANAGEMENT: AN ANAYLSIS OF THE CITIZENSHIP GRADE SYSTEM

2014
Human behaviour is unpredictable and therefore must be shaped to achieve desired goals in organisations. Citizenship Grade System is a scheme employed by the management of Valley View University to instil in students a high degree of good citizenship behaviour. Management of the University have had concerns about the current trend of student behaviour - hence the establishment of this system. On this basis, the study sought to examine the effectiveness of the Citizenship Grade System and its challenges . Questionnaires structured around the objectives of the study were distributed to the staff and students of Valley View University. Respondents were selected using stratified and convenience sampling techniques which drew data from the various departments and schools of the institution. Findings revealed that students were not in support of the citizenship grading system because they saw it as an imposition on them. Also, the biggest challenge identified was lack of commitment and discipline on the part of implementers. Another major challenge was the large numbers of students that had to be catered for using a manual system to credit program attendance and participation. It was recommended that the institution increases the awareness of the system, use fast electronic attendance assessment machines as well as involve students more in the roll out of the system.
