Canadian National Vascular Surgery Boot Camp

2018
With the development of a 5-year integrated vascular surgery residency program in Canada, residency program directors can no longer rely on advanced technical skills in their incoming residents as they did in the past when new trainees were already certified surgeons. In this chapter, we outline our experience in developing a national vascular surgery boot camp curriculum for novice vascular surgery residents and describe the importance of both faculty and peer mentorship to the success of this program. Novice residents benefit from an early, intense technical skills curriculum that introduces them to both open surgical and endovascular techniques. An emphasis on hands-on skills practice and the use of mainly low-fidelity models are quite adequate for beginners. Residents have positively reviewed the program and future iterations will have to be situated within the Competency by Design framework promoted by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
