Reader Response: Characterizing Opioid Use in a US Population With Migraine: Results From the CaMEO Study.

Opioids are not the recommended treatment for migraine. In this study by Lipton et al.,1 which compared people with migraine who were opioid users vs nonusers, opioid users were less likely to have a self-reported physician-diagnosed migraine/chronic migraine diagnosis and had more visits to an emergency department (ED) or urgent care (UC) facility. This is similar to previous work, which showed that patients presenting to a headache center cited ED providers as being the first prescriber for their opioids (20.2%).2 There needs to be better training for ED and UC physicians in headache management.3,4
