Application of quantitative values of softness on the elucidation of structure of bimetallic complexes—II

1980
Abstract NiM(NCS) 4 ·xL (M = Zn, Cd, Hg; L = isothiazole(ist), nitroisothiazole(nit), methylisothiazole(mit), benzylisothiazole(bit), dimethylthiazole(dmt) and aminobenzothiazole(abt); x = 2, 4 and 6) have been synthesised and characterized. Structures are proposed on the basis of conductance, IR and electronic spectra and magnetic moment studies. The softness values of nickel, zinc, cadmium, mercury, thiocyanate ion and various ligands have been calculated. NiM(NCS) 4 forms three types of complexes, i.e. cationic-anionic, [NiL 6 ][Zn(NCS) 4 ], monomeric-bridged, L 4 Ni(NCS) 2 Cd(SCN) 2 , and polymeric-bridged, 〉L 2 Ni(NCS) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 〈. The formation of different types is explained on the basis of difference in total softness values of Ni and M.
