Evaluation of family planning in Ogun State: importance and process in Abeokuta Ogun State.

This study evaluated fertility control practices in Abeokuta the capital city of Ogun State in Nigeria. Approximately 200 respondents were asked to respond to questions on the definition of family planning the purpose of family planning benefits of fertility control to the family and preferred methods of family planning. 65% of respondents were able to appropriately identify some of the purposes of family planning. Contraceptive methods preferred were as follows: IUD 45%; oral contraceptives 30%; injectables 50%; condom 5%; vaginal tablets 10%; and jelly 5%. IUDs were preferred because they do not require motivation are easy to maintain are safer than other methods and do not lead to weight gain. Those who preferred oral contraceptives cited their control of the menstrual cycle as a positive factor. The number of family planning clinics in the area increased from 6 in 1973 to 9 in 1974 reflecting increased demand. The report stresses the importance of ongoing evaluation of efforts in this area. It is further recommended that family planning services be integrated into all health institutions and that government policies on family planning be strengthened. Also needed are research grants to evaluate family planning services.
