Design of a broadband cross-shaped patch antenna for phased array

In this paper, a wide bandwidth, wide-angle patch antenna with acceptable circular polarization performance is presented. The antenna combines the advantages of capacitance coupling feed, backed cavity and a feed network based on Wilkinson power divider, exhibiting an excellent performance. When the antenna is located in an array, it shows low-level mutual coupling and broader beamwidth. The characteristics make the antenna an ideal choice for phased array. Both simulated and measured results demonstrate that the antenna can achieve a wide bandwidth of 110° with 28% bandwidth and for S 11 <−10dB with 30% bandwidth.
