Asilos de la muerte: higiene, sanidad y arquitectura en los cementerios gallegos del siglo XIX

This paper starts off to analyze the problems of public health and hygienists approaches that put the bases for the process of construction of the cemeteries, developed fundamentally along the 19 th century. Despite the repeated legal normative, prohibiting the tradicional intrawalls buries, the economic problems and resistance stirred up by the opposition of the Church braked in the time many of the projects, as is is possible to be verified in the circumstances that sorrounded the planning of the first Santiago general cemetery, in the lands of the confiscated convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval. On the other hand, one first typological characterizacion of the Galician cemeteries of this period is offered, exposing its more excellent architectonic and artistic aspects.
