Comparative performance of three copper IUDs (Fincoid MLCu375 and Nova-T) in a randomized study [abstract]

1983
The clinical performance of 3 copper IUDs--Fincoid Multiload-Cu 375 and Nova-T--was compared in a multicenter study carried out in 7 gynecological outpatient clinics and health centers in Finland in 1979-81. A total of 1003 insertions were performed and results reflected 10412 woman-months of use. The pregnancy rate was 1.1 for the Fincoid device 0.4 for Multiload-Cu 375 and 2.0 for Nove-T. It is hypothesized that the differences in the pregnancy rates for the 3 devices relate to the amount of copper exposed in utero. The continuation rate was 75.6 74.0 and 76.0 respectively for the 3 IUDs. Removals due to infection were comparable for all 3 devices; however there were 11.9 removals/100 women because of bleeding or pain among Fincoid users compared with 9.9 and 9.3 for Multiload-Cu 375 and Nova-T respectively.
