Thermodynamic assessment and experimental investigation of the Al–Mn–Ni system

Abstract The ternary Al–Mn–Ni system plays an important role in the development of several structural and functional materials. To accomplish a purposeful development of alloys related to this system, an assessment of the thermodynamic parameters was performed. The assessment is based on literature data, as well as experimental investigations regarding the phase equilibria at 800 and 1000 °C. Moreover, the decomposition of the disordered A 2 phase in the Mn-rich corner of the Al–Mn–Ni system was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and in-situ X-ray diffraction. Calculations based on the present description are in excellent agreement with the experimental data available in literature and reproduce the experimental results of the present work.
