Efficacy of Intralesional Triamcinolone Acetonide and Hyaluronidase Compared with that of Placental Extract in the Treatment of OSMF: A Comparative Clinical Study

2014
Aim: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a common pre-malignant condition in the Indian subcontinent, caused by chewing areca nut and other irritants in various forms. It is characterized by excessive collagen formation and thus stiffness and inelasticity of oral mucosa. Its medical treatment is not yet fully standardized. In this study we compared the efficacy of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide and hyaluronidase compared with that of placental extract. Material and methods: 128 patients of age group 15-68 years were enrolled in the study who presented with the signs and symptoms of OSMF . The patients were divided randomly into 2 groups of 64 patients each. Group A were administered a combination of triamcinolone acetonide (Kenacort) (10mg/ml) and hyaluronidase (Hyanidase) (1500 IU) intralesionally for 3 months at an interval of 15 days between consecutive doses. Group B were administered injection of placental extract (Inj. placentrex) (2 ml) at an interval of 3 days for 15 days. The course was repeated after 1 month for 3 months. Treatment outcome was evaluated on the basis of improvement in symptom and sign scores. Student
