Method for waste classification of non-fuel assembly core components

1992
The disposal of non-fuel assembly (NFA) core hardware has not been a routine matter because differing applications of the 10CFR61 (of the Code of Federal Regulations) waste classification can lead to designation of the same NFA irradiated component as class C (low level) or greater than class C waste. The question to dispose of the NFA hardware in a low-level facility or a deep geological repository has economic and planning ramifications for utilities and waste disposal facilities. A general formulation has been developed at the University of Florida to support planning decisions regarding the classification of NFA hardware. The formulation concludes that Zircaloy burnable poison assemblers, Zircaloy shrouds, and some control rod assemblies may be disposed of as low-level waste. Other components, including most control rod assemblies and nearly all Inconel components, may require deep geological repository burial.
