Focused on basketball and boxing, manners of celebration at various Black festivals, fashion and the personification of style, this section boasts the writings of Jeff Greenfield, Gerald Early, John Edgar Wideman, Michael Eric Dyson, William D. Piersen, and Shane White and Graham White. Both texts open with expansive introductions written by the respective editors where they recall past studies, provide an historical and cultural foundation and introduce each work as a step in filling the void of scholarly materials on Black expression on the local, regional and national level. Although the respective editors describe their collections as not exhaustive, both works present current and past discourse stipulating the need for continued study of Black expression. Caponi suggests that these writings "call to readers and scholars for response" (31). Suitable as undergraduate textbooks, graduate reference and mandatory reading for the interdisciplinary scholar, these compilations are priceless additions to any collection and will serve as leading texts for decades to come.
