Competitiveness and Performance Measurement in the Construction Industry

During the last decades, the international environment of the construction industry has been modified by new technologies and communications, fast transport; integrated markets, and free trade agreements. However, a persistent global particularity of companies and projects in this industry is that they tend to have low productivity that generates delays and cost overruns that show low competitiveness. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of research on competitiveness and performance measurement in the construction industry. For this purpose, the detailed analysis of 51 articles was used through the different databases available, such as: SCOPUS, EBSCO and Emerald Insight, also used pages from open scientific communities such as Researchgate. This analysis establishes that, in the construction industry, the lack of a consensus definition of competitiveness has not prevented researchers and senior management from measuring it indirectly through different performance measurement systems mainly those based on competitiveness factors and indicators. However, there is still insufficient evidence of the correlation between competitiveness and performance measurement in this industry, so more research and / or models that provide greater certainty are necessary.
