SAFETY AGAINST CAPSIZING: THE PROBLEM AND SOME SOLUTIONS

1984
In the first part of the paper the problem of safety against capsizing of ships in natural seas is discussed. Despite some major efforts in this field it is still difficult for designers to assess safety against capsizing of unconventional designs. Some suggestions for improving this situation are put forward. The causes of capsizing are discussed in the second part of the paper; it is pointed out that this depends both on design decisions and on the operation of the ship, and the two aspects are not independent of each other. Despite this the various factors have to be investigated separately, and again there are some suggestions for this.
