Integration of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Voice Communications into the FAA National Airspace (NAS)
2017
As UAS technology advances and full-scale operations become feasible and cost effective, the pressure to integrate commercial UAS operations into the National Airspace System (NAS) will drive the need for an architecture that supports seamless interaction between UAS and Air Traffic Control (ATC). This paper considers four high-level architecture alternatives that leverage the FAA NextGen National Voice System (NVS) and identifies the pros and cons of each architecture alternative. The recommended architecture is to have a UAS Gateway to establish connections to the managing Air Traffic Voice Node (AVN) within the airspace via a networked Ground-to-Ground (G/G) connection. Based on this architecture choice, this paper focuses on the UAS Gateway design and functional requirements development.
