Objective: to characterize the scientific production on the application of the nursing process (NP) atthe national level. Method: integrative literature review with searches in the LILACS, BDENF andPUBMED databases. An analysis was carried out in six phases, and the selected studies werecategorized by applying an adapted data collection script, structured into ten variables. Results: 447articles were taken, 95 of which were selected from the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.Studies in the Portuguese language predominated (96.8%), of the study of case type (25.2%),developed in the Northeast region (42.1%), in tertiary care level (70%), in the adult health specialty.(32.8%), who mentioned the use of standardized languages ​​(93.7%), with nursing diagnosis beingthe most prevalent NP stage. There was also a reduction in the number of studies that discussedcomputerized NP (3.2%) and the evidence-based study method (1.1%). In addition, in 43.2% of thestudies, no theoretical basis was included in the application of the nursing process. Conclusion: theadvances and challenges in the structuring of NP at the national level were identified, allowing theacquisition of relevant elements, in order to contribute to the improvement and recognition of NP asa practice inherent in nursing care.
