Facilitatory and inhibitory effects of TRH on lateral hypothalamic and ventromedial neurons

1979
Abstract Thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) has many effects on the central nervous system. In the present study TRH was applied electroosmotically to hypothalamic neurons. Results indicate that TRH has both facilitatory and inhibitory effects on lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) and ventromedial nucleus (VMH) neurons. The present data demonstrate that TRH has a direct effect on the central nervous system independent of noradrenergic, dopaminergic, or cholinergic mechanisms. The anorexic effect of TRH might be caused by direct facilitation of glucoreceptive neurons in the VMH.
