A Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithm Based on Fuzzy Control for IoT Heterogeneous Access Networks

2013
Currently, the technologies using multiple access networks to realize reliable communications have been used in Internet of Things (IoT) wireless access systems. Among these heterogeneous access networks, the performances of vertical handoff decision algorithms will deeply impact the performances and reliabilities of the entire IoT systems. Some researchers have proposed vertical handoff decision algorithms based on RSSI, bandwidth, service fee and latency, etc. factors to realize handoff in mobile GSM, WLAN and 4G networks. However, since IoT always deal with human unattended terminals and mainly transmits data services, it requires more reliability, less latency in vertical handoff than those human interactive mobile networks. In this paper, new vertical handoff decision algorithm based on fuzzy control is proposed to meet the handoff requirements of IoT. Fuzzy control models of RSSI values, bandwidth, latency and preference of user are constructed, and decision algorithm based on those models is proposed to gain fast and reliability handoff performances. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms those existing algorithms in handoff efficiency and reliability, and fits for IoT applications.
