Providing appropriate technology for emerging markets: A case study

2016
The literature is sparse on comprehensive in-depth studies about the intricate processes involved in shaping and delivering appropriate technology for emerging markets. Building on the case study of five Chinese solar thermal companies and one association, our study aims to understand how the innovator’s choices regarding the use of technology and organizational practices for new product development enables companies to design and diffuse appropriate technology in emerging markets. The paper uncovers two critical factors that enhance appropriateness of technology: redefining the identity of technology and building local supply system. Our analysis shows that synergetic innovation in both architectural and component leads to the appropriate functionalities desired by emerging markets. Moreover, modular design and the building of local supply system enhance process appropriateness of technology. Our study provides insights in shaping appropriate technology to meet the unique demands of emerging economies.
