Analysis of risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity

2009
Objective To investigate the incidence and the risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the Ruian People’s Hospital. Methods A total of 540 preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Ruian People’s Hospital received ROP screening from August 1, 2005 to August 1, 2008. Results Among these infants, 44 had developed ROP (81%), including 35 infants with stage Ⅰ ROP, 7 infants with stage Ⅱ ROP and 2 infants with stage Ⅲ ROP. 2 infants received laser therapy and no blind case happened. Logistic regression analysis indicated that low birth weight, weeks of gestation, long term oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) were the high risk factors of ROP. Conclusion The incidence of ROP was 8.1% in Ruian People’s Hospital according the result of this study. Low birth weight, weeks of gestation, long term oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation and respiratory distress syndrome were the high risk factors of ROP.
