Drawing on data obtained from surveys the study analyses theneeds of collections and facilities available. Recommendations are thenmade concerning the future development of conservation in the museum context on anationwide basis. Contents: historical background of collections andconservation resources, nature and scope of the conservation survey carriedout, distribution of museums and conservators; responses to questionnaires,management and maintenance of collections, conservation procedures, policy andplanning, environmental control; the state of collections and theirconservation needs: the Natural and Earth Sciences, Human History, Books, Archives, Photographs, Industry, Transport, Science, Fine Art, Decorative Art; the stateof conservation resources and services, conservator's training,qualifications and employment, provision of conservation services by public agenciesin Scotland, expenditure and funding; conclusions and recommendations includingthe wider context of Britain.
