Francesc Muntaner i Moner, un gravador mallorquí del segle XVIII

La meva tesi doctoral esta centrada en la figura de Francesc Muntaner i Moner (1743-1805), un gravador del segle XVIII que pertany a una gran familia d’artistes mallorquins. Destaca per la seva extensa produccio, de gran qualitat, i perque va formar part de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, participant en els projectes culturals mes importants de la politica il·lustrada del moment. L’estudi es divideix en tres grans blocs: 1. En el primer hi ha una introduccio, justificant l’eleccio del tema, l’estat de la questio, els problemes metodologics amb que m’he trobat, les atribucions de les obres i les questions tecniques, diferenciant els termes de planxa, lamina i estampa, que sovint es confonen. Seguidament, he analitzat el context, es a dir, la situacio del gravat espanyol a la segona meitat del segle XVIII, la funcio i tematica, el tipus de mercat i clientela, la diferencia entre el gravat d’invencio i de traduccio, i he elaborat un llistat amb els principals gravadors contemporanis. Despres, centrant-me en el gravat a l’illa de Mallorca i els aspectes concrets de la familia Muntaner, he fet un recorregut pels antecedents, coetanis i descendents del nostre artista. Per ultim, la biografia de Francesc Muntaner i Moner, la seva formacio academica i trajectoria professional, fent-ne una valoracio critica i reivindicant la seva faceta didactica, ja que fou el mestre de Manuel Esquivel de Sotomayor, un gravador de renom. 2. En segon lloc, he elaborat el cataleg de les seves obres, amb 154 originals i 38 atribucions. En cadascuna de les fitxes hi figura el titol, el tema, la signatura, el lloc i l’any d’execucio, les mides, el suport i la tecnica, la col·leccio a la qual pertany, si hi ha altres exemplars, una descripcio, les observacions i la bibliografia. Per dur a terme la investigacio, he treballat a: • La Biblioteca de Catalunya. • El Gabinet de Dibuixos i Gravats del Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. • La Biblioteca Nacional de Espana a Madrid. • La Calcografia Nacional de Madrid. • La Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid. • La Biblioteca Lluis Alemany de Palma. • La Biblioteca Publica de Palma. • La Biblioteca de la Fundacion Bartolome March de Palma. • L’Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca a Palma. • L’Arxiu Diocesa de Mallorca a Palma. • El Museu de Mallorca a Palma. La major part de les estampes son de tematica religiosa (iconografia cristologica, mariana, angelica i hagiografia), pero tambe hi ha gravat documental (targetes de visita, escuts heraldics), arquitectura efimera (tumuls funeraris), il·lustracio de llibres (El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, El hombre feliz, independiente del mundo y de la fortuna, La Conjuracion de Catilina y la Guerra de Jugurta), la col·leccio de retrats solts o els Retratos de los Espanoles Ilustres, aixi com el gravat arquitectonic amb els Disenos de la Catedral de Malaga, i les series reials amb la reproduccio de pintures reials, les Antiguedades Arabes de Espana, les Vistas de los Reales Sitios de Aranjuez i el Real Picadero de Carlos IV. 3. L’ultim bloc esta dedicat a les conclusions, a la bibliografia i webgrafia. Tambe hi he afegit un apendix documental, on s’hi recullen les copies d’actes originals, cartes, testaments i notes que fan referencia a la trajectoria artistica i biografica del nostre gravador. En aquest punt es pot consultar l’arbre geneologic que he elaborat. En l’apendix d’il·lustracions complementaries, s’incorporen aquelles estampes de Manuel Esquivel de Sotomayor, que va realizar sota la direccio del seu mestre, Francesc Muntaner i Moner. My thesis focuses on the figure of Francesc Moner Muntaner (1743-1805), a writer of the eighteenth century who belongs to a family of artists from Mallorca. He is known for his extensive production, high quality, and that he was part of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes from San Fernando, participating in the most important cultural projects in the policy enlightened at the moment. The study is divided into three main areas: 1. In the first one, there is an introduction justifying the choice of subject, the state of the art, the methodological problems which I have found, the attributed works and technical issues, differentiating the terms of iron, sheet and prints, which are often confused. Then I analysed the context, focusing on the situation of the Spanish engravings in the second half of the eighteenth century, the use and the thematic, the type of market and customers, the difference between the author engraving and the doubling engraving, and I made a list of the leading contemporary writers. Next, focusing on the engraving on the island of Mallorca and specific aspects of family Muntaner, I made a contemporary and descendants journey through history of our artist. Finally, the biography of Francesc Muntaner and Moner, his education and professional career, making a critical evaluation and claiming his educational aspect, as he was the professor of Manuel Esquivel Sotomayor, a renowned engraver. 2. Secondly, I have prepared a catalogue of his works, with 154 original and 38 attributions. In each of the chips there is its title, subject, signature, place and year of implementation, sizes, support and the technic, collection which belongs to, if there are other examples, a description, observations and literature. To do the research, I have worked at: • The Catalonia Library • The Cabinet of Drawings and Prints from the Art National Museum of Catalonia. • The National Library of Spain in Madrid. • The National Chalcography in Madrid. • The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. • The Lluis Alemany Library in Palma. • The Public Library of Palma. • The Library of the Foundation Bartolome March in Palma. • The files of the Kingdom of Mallorca in Palma. • The Diocesan files in Palma de Mallorca. • The Mallorca Museum in Palma. Most of the prints are of religious themes (iconography Christological, Marian Angelica and hagiography), but there are also documents engraved (business cards, coats of arms), ephemeral architecture (burial mounds), illustration of books (El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, El hombre feliz, independiente del mundo y de la fortuna, La Conjuracion de Catilina y la Guerra de Jugurta), the collection of portraits or Retratos de los Espanoles Ilustres, and the architectural engraving, Disenos de la Catedral de Malaga, and the series of royal paintings reproduction, Antiguedades Arabes de Espana, les Vistas de los Reales Sitios de Aranjuez i el Real Picadero de Carlos IV. 3. The last block is dedicated to the conclusions, bibliography and bibliography websites. I have also added an appendix, where the copies of the original acts are listed, letters, wills and notes referring to the artistic career and biographical of our engraver. At this point you can see the genealogical tree that I made. The appendix of complementary illustrations includes those pictures of Manuel Esquivel Sotomayor, who perform under the direction of his master, Francesc Muntaner and Moner.
