Northern Flinders Ranges - Lake Frome plains uranium exploration under cover — new geological insights through collaboration

2009
Introduction The northern Flinders Ranges – Lake Frome plains region is one of the state’s most prospective areas for mineral exploration (particularly for uranium), however, there are still major parts of the geological framework that are unresolved. One of the main parts of the region’s geology that is poorly understood is the regolith and associated landscape history. This is surprising given the dramatic exposures of a wide range of regolith materials and landforms as well as the importance of this part of the geological history for the dispersion, expression and secondary concentration of uranium mineralisation. Recent collaborative research by PIRSA and the University of Adelaide has made some major contributions to this geological framework, as well as developing this region for field-based geoscience education.
