Children of the dark in a tropical country

2019
This chapter discusses transformations in the Brazilian goth subculture from the 1990s to the 2010s, focusing on their representations and how they describe themselves in a national context. The main objective of this chapter is to elaborate a media map of the Brazilian goths and their representations in the media. Through media archeology practices and observation as a methodology of analysis of mainstream media and niche media, it is possible to see continuities and changes in the longevity of the subculture. Goth subculture on TV shows and goth fanzines disclose stereotypical representations as much as they present how goth behaviors and lifestyles are connected to individual identities and national ones. We also argue that the goth subculture has reemerged through some publications and media events on digital media in the 2010s through discussions of goths’ own practices and representations of age, gender and race. As an initial result, it is noticed that there has been a transition on how Brazilian goths deal with their postcolonial constitution as much as they embrace and deal with their own life choices and dark aesthetics and how their performative roles can change throughout their participation on the scene, from fan to content curator to entrepreneur.
