Calcitonin and Parathyroid Hormone Provocative Tests in Fasting Hypercalciuria

1989
A primary role for bone as the source of Ca in fasting hypercalciuria (FH) of stone formers (SF) has been suggested by abundant evidence (1–3), Seventeen years ago, Libermann and de Vries (4) proposed a pathogenetic model for the explanation of the primary hypercalciuric states in which some, as yet undefined, deregulation of calcitonin and/or parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion was hypothesized. Since then, many contradictory studies have been performed in regard to PTH status in hypercalciuric SF. However, little, if any, further information has been added on the role of calcitonin in this metabolic disorder. The aim of the present study was to investigate this matter.
