Cathelicidin in Gastrointestinal Disorders

2018
Abstract Cathelicidin, an important host defense peptide, plays crucial roles in innate and adaptive immunity. It can eliminate pathogenic microbes, modulate host immune responses, and promote wound healing. Studies reveal that the expression of cathelicidin correlates with human diseases, highlighting the clinical importance of this molecule. Experimental evidence shows that cathelicidin could protect against Helicobacter pylori infection and associated gastritis, inhibit gastric cancer growth, and promote gastric ulcer healing in mice. It can also alleviate ulcerative colitis and inhibit colon cancer growth. In conclusion, cathelicidin represents an appealing therapeutic agent for gastrointestinal disorders.
