On quantum statistical variational principles

Using the equivalence between Feyman's and Bogolubov's variational principle, we discuss in the formalism of Hamiltonian quantum mechanics an improved upper bound for the free energy which has been given recently by Zeile using path integral methods. We show that Zeile's variational principle does not guarantee a thermodynamically consistent description.
