Role of electroencephalography in diagnosis and treatment of moyamoya disease

2019
Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a kind of disease characterized with progressive cerebrovascular occlusion. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a well-established tool for brain assessment and has a close connection with cerebral blood flow (CBF). This article reviews the characteristics of MMD, the correlation between EEG and CBF, EEG features, and its clinical application in intraoperative monitoring, prognosis assessment, and diagnosis and differential diagnosis of episodic events in MMD. MMD patients show a relatively special EEG pattern and EEG is useful for diagnosis, intraoperative brain monitoring, and prognosis assessment in MMD, especially for children. Key words: Moyamoya disease; Electroencephalography; Re-build up; Epilepsy; Intraoperative monitoring
