UTILITY OF GANGI AND NEW DESIGN OF PUBLIC APARTMENT HOUSES IN COLD AND SNOWY REGION IN JAPAN

It is becoming increasingly common to equip the chained corridor of public apartment houses in snowy regions of Japan with a roof called "Gangi." It is intended mainly for winter use. This study analyzed the continued and the open form relating to snow protection. From the resident's point of view, the research clarified how to use Gangi in real life, how to remove the snow, and what would be required for housing. In addition, it attempted to clarify the ideal image of Gangi and the common amenity space for the apartment house.
