A Mutation in Salmonella Typhimurium That Enhances Resistance to Oxygen-Independent Antimicrobal Neutrophil Protein

1988
Our experience with the cationic antimicrobial proteins (CAPS) of human neutrophil leukocytes and the experiences of other investigators have led us to believe that resistance to them in Salmonella typhimurium is under the control of at laast two distinct genes or clusters of genes. We think the matter of importance for, although these bacteria can survive intracellularly in neutrophils, the basis for their capacity to survive is poorly understood. Perhaps enhanced understanding of the in vitro resistance of Salmonella to the CAPS will shed light on Salmonella strategies for intracellular survival.
