Joint incongruity and meniscal degeneration: an electron microscopic examination

The menisci play an important role in stress shielding the joint surfaces of the knee following intra-articular fractures and other conditions that might increase trans-articular pressure. The effect of such shielding, however, results in significant wear and degeneration of the meniscus itself.
