The didactic treatment of program construction is of central importance when teaching beginners how to program: Most beginners need explicit instruction to solve programming problems successfully on their own. This paper describes two approaches to such explicit instruction, using a common example problem: 1. object-oriented analysis and object-oriented design using linguistic analysis, CRC cards and scenario roleplay 2. the design recipes of the TeachScheme! project
