Experience with the copper T in India.

1975
Clinical trials with copper-T IUDs were initiated in July 1971; 4357 IUDs were inserted between July 1 1971 and August 31 1973. The overall continuation rate at the end of 30 months was 42.7. Of 40 pregnancies 34 occurred by the end of 12 months. Pregnancies were absent after 22 months. Expulsion displacement occurred in 528 women. The medical reasons for removing the device included menstrual disorders infection and persistent pain. Changes in menstrual patterns were seen mostly in the earlier cycles. Persistent bleeding disorders necessistated removal of the device giving a net cumulative termination rate of 9.5/100 users at the end of 30 months. 2 perforations and 45 cases of infection were reported yielding a net cumulative termination rate of 1.1/100 users at the end of 30 months. Better understanding of the device and proper motivation should improve acceptability and reduce removals for personal reasons.
