Changes of neuron specificenolase levels in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Objective To exam neuron specific enolase (NSE) levels in neonates with hypox ic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in order to study their roles in assessing clinical progress, severity and prognosis in children with HIE. Methods A total of 39 neonates with HIE, including mild, moderate and severe group were enrolled. 25 normal neonates were used as the control group, and the differences among the groups before and after the treatment were analyzed. Results Compared with the controls,the levels of serum NSE were significantly higher in neonates with HIE. The more severe the clinical degree of HIE was the more significantly the levels of serum NSE increased (P0.05). Conclusion Serum NSE levels may be useful in assessment of disease severity and neurlogical outcome in children with HIE.
