The Seismic History of Nicolosi (Catania, Italy)
2001
A detailed study of the main earthquakes which affected the village of Nicolosi (Catania, Sicily, Italy) has been performed in order to reconstruct its seismic history, a seismic site catalogue and the damage scenarios which occurred in the past. In the last five hundred years Nicolosi was destroyed three times (1633, 1669 and 1693) and more or less severely damaged many times (e.g. 1536, 1818, 1832, 1883, etc). Destruction or serious damage are mainly caused by earthquakes occurring in the Etnean area, while moderate effects are usually related to the earthquakes associated with activity of the regional fault system.
