Portable device for identifying concealed substances

2008
FIELD: physics. SUBSTANCE: device for identifying concealed substances has a source of monochromatic neutrons and concomitant monochromatic α-particles, an α-particle detector enclosed in a vacuum chamber, a γ-radiation detector and recording electronic equipment comprising an electronic data collection unit, a control panel, a data processing and reception program unit, a user interface and a power supply, made in form of two portable modules - an inspection module and a control module, connected by Ethernet- and power supply cables whose length ensures safety of the operator. The inspection module includes a source of monochromatic neutrons and concomitant monochromatic α-particles, an α-particle detector, a γ-radiation detector and recording electronic equipment; the control module includes a control panel, a data processing and reception program unit, a user interface and power supply; the γ-radiation detector is placed at an angle closer to 45° to the direction of the beam of labeled neutrons, perpendicular the front plane of the module. The γ-radiation detector is based on a LYSO crystal and is protected from the beam of labeled neutrons; a test module is fitted with a system for directing onto the examined object, rigidly connected to the source of monochromatic neutrons, where the said system is based on laser line generators, for which a translucent window is made in the housing of the inspection module; the α-particle detector used is a multi-channel silicon detector. EFFECT: design of portable and compact device for operation in field conditions, reduced minimum of detected concealed mass, improved conditions for identification of concealed substances, increased probability of identifying dangerous substances and reduced probability of false alarm, increased accuracy of guiding a beam of labeled neutrons onto the analysed object. 1 dwg
