Effect of processing parameters on coefficient of thermal expansion of ceramic tiles

2019
Thermal expansion is an important parameter to ensure good compatibility between ceramic tile body and engobe/glaze system in prevention of crazing and peeling issue. The aim of this research work is to investigate the effect of ceramic tiles processing parameters by firing temperature, pressing pressure, thickness and particle size against coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of ceramic tiles body of wall, floor and porcelain tiles together with water absorption measurement. Generally, porcelain tile shows the highest CTE than wall and floor tiles, which is in the range of 8.0 to 9.0 x10−6 °C−1. Overall, mineralogical composition of ceramic tiles, particle size distribution and processing parameters by firing temperature and pressing pressure have influenced to the CTE of ceramic tiles.Thermal expansion is an important parameter to ensure good compatibility between ceramic tile body and engobe/glaze system in prevention of crazing and peeling issue.
